The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, (HURIWA) has carpeted the Rivers State’s Governor, Nyesom Wike for allegedly launching crackdowns on his political opponents along with these of his private Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The rights group in an announcement issued by its nationwide coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, urged the Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Usman Alkali Baba, the Director General of the State security Services, DSS Alhaji Yusuf Magaji Bichi and the Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya to instruct their operatives not to be used by Governor Wike for his “tyrannical attacks against political rival”.

As a lawyer, Governor Wike, in response to HURIWA, should be “abreast of the unquestionably binding and authoritative undeniable fact that constitutional democracy embodies quite a few constitutional and democratic rights which could be fundamental human rights enshrined in Chapter 4 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria of 1999 as amended, along with the rights to civil and political freedoms, freedom of affiliation, peaceful assembly, and respect for the dignity of the human specific individual.

According to the rights group, the governor of Rivers State shouldn’t be associated to tyranny, dictatorship, or waging warfare on political opponents because of he’s a seasoned politician.

HUIRIWA acknowledged that Governor Wike was alleged to have given the go-ahead for the arrest of a second House of Representatives member and PDP supporter from Rivers State.

 

In reference to the Mega Tools Filling Station owned by Hon. Chinyere Igwe, member representing Port Harcourt Federal Constituency II, Wike had ordered police to arrest the proprietor in the middle of the Saturday flag-off of a state problem in Omagwa, Ikwerre Local Government Area.

Security personnel from the Rivers Police Command reportedly entered, sealed off, and occupied the gasoline station the day prior, apparently on Wike’s orders, citing allegations of shopping for and promoting in illegally refined petroleum merchandise, which the lawmaker denied and accused the governor of political victimization.

The rights group responded to Governor Wike’s newest acts by reminding him that he wouldn’t keep office indefinitely.
